Video Journalism
Video Journalism
Course Expectations:
Course Goals and Objectives: Students will research a short history of the media and then move to analyze their own consumption of news and information. With ethics and responsibility as their guide, students will practice the fundamentals of interviewing, fact gathering, and reporting the news by learning to ask detailed and open-ended questions and by practicing writing concisely and succinctly. Students will learn the value of teamwork when working to meet a deadline. By working on a small-scale production of a television news magazine format featuring stories around LMS, students will learn about camera angles, production terminology, digital storyboarding and audio editing, and be exposed to information about occupations available to those interested in journalism as a career.

Student Outcomes & Assessment: The school policies as stated in the LMS Student Handbook will be followed for tardiness, absences, and behavior. Students are expected to come to class ready to learn and prepared for class; this includes submitting all work on time. Late work is a serious detriment to a student’s success and may be subject to a reduction in credit. Students are responsible to get missed work from their teachers when returning from an absence. I am available for extra help most days after school; please be sure to schedule an appointment. Missing work may result in a zero or incomplete grade on report cards.
Grades are computed using the Ladue Middle School Grading scale. As appropriate, individual unit and assignment scoring guides are developed and points are assigned. These scoring guides are provided to students at the beginning of the unit or lesson.
Materials and Technology: Each student should come prepared with assigned work, binder, folder, paper, flash drive, and writing implements.
Students have the opportunity to use and handle cameras and other expensive equipment. Students are expected to follow the Ladue School District Acceptable Usage Policy. Students must use technological resources appropriately, and their usage will be monitored. Failure to follow the policy could result in student loss of computer privileges. As technology is utilized significantly in Video Journalism, it will be the student’s responsibility to make up work missed due to loss of computer or technology privileges.
Parents and Students are Important!
I look forward to a fun and rewarding year. Thanks for all your support! Please feel free to call or e-mail with comments, compliments, or concerns. During the day, calls go directly into voicemail. We will do our best to get back to you promptly!
